I woke up poor again today
The sidewalk was last night’s bed
I’ve got no water left to quench my thirst
No money to buy my bread
And I cry out
But no one hears what I’ve said

On the streets of no fortune
Where we sit with outstretched hands
The people there got nothing to share
But their indifference and contempt

I staggered down the same street again
Begging for a life
I leaned my tired body back up against a wall
And threw my arms up toward the sky
And I cry, “Please!”
But people walk right on by

Down the streets of no fortune
Where we sit with outstretched hands
The people there got nothing to share
But their indifference and contempt

And I know that
I may never exist
But they can’t take away
This will inside me to live
This life out on my own

I knew I needed to find me a job
So I walked into the corner store
The man looked at me and said,
“You got no future here”
You’re too ragged and you’re too poor
And he stood up
And shuffled me right back
through that door

Back to the streets of no fortune
Where we sit with outstretched hands
The people there got nothing to share
But their indifference and contempt

And I know that
These people really don’t care
If I die tonight
That’s one less unfortunate here
I hope someday
Someone will give me a chance
I won’t fade away
Without trying again and again
So I walk on down the street again

I woke up poor again today
But I haven’t lost the right to choose
Ain’t nothing out here gonna hold me back
‘Cause I’ve got nothing left to lose
